What are Aetherbeads?
Aetherbeads are the runes or relics used by Kikumoria to channel their magic. Being wielders of elements, the need for an object to be able to deposit some of their magic into is hugely beneficial. If one's aetherbeads are ever damaged or destroyed, the results are unpleasant. Often, the Kikumoria will need to find a way to release some of the magic, otherwise they risk transforming into a beast of themselves!
What do they look like?
Aetherbeads can take on many different shapes, colors, sizes. During a Kiku's incubation in the Moonpool, dust and other precious materials clash and form into their unique relic. During a Kiku's incubation in the Moonpool, dust and other precious materials clash and form into their unique relic. Some are born with one large sphere, others are born with so many that their parents will often have a Relicsmith turn them into necklaces, hair pieces, etc.
For a short period of time (a few days), Kiku’s can remove their aetherbeads for rest and reprieve (assuming they are detachable). The mana is siphoned through the aetherbeads, and needs to be released from it’s core every once in awhile, however. This allows the Kiku’s core to cool down, rest and replenish. However, too long would render your mana unstable and can have deadly consequences.
Altering Aetherbeads
Cracked beads will result in some instability, and also leak of mana from the core when being siphoned/wearing the beads. Destroyed beads can result in overheating the core, but the Relicsmith can recreate new beads for you. It used to be somewhat taboo to alter your aetherbeads, but it is now a much more common practice.
